9.11. Which-2.23 and Alternatives

Which takes one or more arguments. For each of its arguments it prints to stdout the full path of the executables that would have been executed when this argument had been entered at the shell prompt. It does this by searching for an executable or script in the directories listed in the environment variable PATH using the same algorithm as bash.

Approximate build time: less than 0.1 SBU
Required disk space: 1.2 MB

9.11.1. Prepare Which for compilation: 

./configure --prefix=/usr

Compile the package: 

make

This package does not come with a test suite.

Install the package: 

make install

shows the full path of (shell) commands installed in your PATH

9.11.3. The 'which' Script

The second option (for those who don't want to install the package) is to create a simple script: 

cat > /usr/bin/which << "EOF"
#!/bin/bash
type -pa "$@" | head -n 1 ; exit ${PIPESTATUS[0]}
EOF
chmod -v 755 /usr/bin/which
chown -v root:root /usr/bin/which

This should work OK and is probably the easiest solution for most cases, but is not the most comprehensive implementation.
